Lenten Opportunities

The season of Lent, a time of preparation for Holy Week and Easter, begins March 1. This year’s themes for worship and small groups will relate to Adam Hamilton’s book “Final Words from the Cross.” You’ll be informed, challenged, and inspired in your Christian walk as you contemplate Jesus’ last spoken words before his death.
Lenten small groups begin the week of March 5 and will be offered on Sundays at 10:15 a.m. in the usual small group locations, as well as on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. Choose the time that works best for you. If you are unable to attend during daytime, ask Judy Bush about the possibility of a night session. In addition, let Judy know if you need childcare for the Sundays of March 5 and April 2, since there is no regular church school on those days.
You may purchase a copy of “Final Words” in the Great Room, leaving cash or a $14 check made out to DCC. In preparation for your small group’s first session, read the prologue and chapter one. Even if you aren’t going to be in a small group, think about purchasing a book to enhance your spiritual growth.

A Constructive Conversation

Pastor Carol recently preached about her desire to be more forthcoming with her views and insights about current events. That sermon generated some good conversation, which she’d like to continue in a larger context with anyone who is interested. How can we, as followers of Christ, be open to learning from others and state our own opinions and sense of calling, while also being humble and respectful? Can our members and pastor do that without creating a chasm between “us” and “them,” and without having those with minority opinions feel marginalized? Amy Lockwood, a church member and skilled facilitator, will guide us as we meet to explore these questions on Sunday, February 19, at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary. Note: This is not a meeting to debate opinions about current events, but to instead discuss how we, as a church, might encourage openness without creating divisions. Questions?
