The goal of our church school program is to provide children and young teens with a progressive curriculum focusing on Jesus’ message of love. We help children understand the stories of the Bible and how Christians are called to live in community with others, care for the created world, and work for peace and justice.
Church school classes are offered from September to May, with the initial gathering taking place on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Sunday mornings include everyone in worship in the sanctuary. Children and youth move into church school classes during the second verse of the last hymn, and parents and guardians pick them up after small groups have concluded (at 11 a.m.).
Our bright, new classrooms are a place for our young people to be themselves while exploring their spirituality and relationship with God as Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. Teachers include committed adult volunteers who work in teams to engage the children and youth in a fun, multifaceted way.
The current class breakdown is as follows:
- Nursery (birth through preschool)
- K-4th Grade
- Youth Group for 5th – 8th grades
In accordance with our curriculum, all classes focus on the same theme each week, with the material tailored in age-appropriate ways. Every other year, the 2nd through 4th grade class includes a module focusing on the Lord’s Supper, culminating with a Sunday for celebrating first communion with the rest of the congregation.
As the youth enter high school, they transition to the senior high youth group. Scheduling can be a challenge with this age, so a varied approach is offered, from occasional field trips and outreach projects, to participating in worship leadership, to general “hanging out” and discussing relevant topics.
In addition, a six-month confirmation class is offered periodically for those in 9th grade and up, culminating with the opportunity to affirm one’s baptism in the presence of the rest of the congregation and to officially become a member of the church.
*** Note: registration is required for all youth and children involved in church programs. Sign up forms are located here.
